🟡DegenReborn & Chainlink Integration on Onchain Automation and VRF

A collaborative work between DegenReborn & Chainlink

We’re excited to announce that DegenReborn, an almost-fully-onchain Web3 social game powered by ChatGPT, has integrated Chainlink Automation and VRF on BNB Chain mainnet. Automation and VRF are used in combination to help fairly select and reliably distribute airdrops to stakers, and VRF also helps fairly determine in-game outcomes. Ultimately these Web3 services increase the transparency and credibility of our game mechanics.

DegenReborn is a DeFi-themed Web3 game where players can search for opportunities and seek rewards. Across different seasons, players aim to increase their LifeScore and outcompete other “incarnations.” The game features a series of Crypto Hero NFTs, a scheduled airdrop, and a Degen Jackpot.

Notably, DegenReborn has won awards in three well-known hackathons: the Mask x StarkWare Hackathon, ETH Denver Hackathon, and CyberConnect x BNB Chain Hackathon.

The game also features a Crypto legend NFT collection called Degen2009 and has gained significant traction among players during Flash Beta, with over 18,000 unique paid addresses.

Fairly Distributing Airdrops

The airdrop mechanism uses both Chainlink Automation and VRF to reliably and randomly distribute rewards to stakers every hour. This feature is designed to increase engagement, boost player retention, and promote a healthy in-game economy.

We chose Chainlink Automation to access:

• Highly reliable, performant, and decentralized automation — Chainlink Automation ensures transactions are identified and confirmed quickly even during periods of heavy network congestion by leveraging Chainlink’s battle-tested transaction manager.

• Time-tested infrastructure that helps save costs — Chainlink Automation enables us to eliminate in-house automation infrastructure costs, reduce resources spent on DevOps, and increase speed and efficiency.

• Built to enable faster scaling — Chainlink Automation enables us to scale faster and avoid the challenges that come with building and maintaining the infrastructure needed to reliably automate across multiple chains.

• Unlocks new use cases — With smart contract automation, we’re able to explore new use cases and unlock capabilities that would otherwise not have been possible.

• Easy-to-use — Developers are able to schedule time-based automation jobs in seconds using the Chainlink Automation Job Scheduler's no-code UI.

Randomized Player Lifespans

When players start the game, an in-game mechanism using Chainlink VRF determines how long their character will live. VRF plays a key role in this mechanism as it helps ensure the character’s lifespan is generated in a fair manner. Players then aim to increase their LifeScore as high as possible before time runs out.

Chainlink VRF works by combining block data that is still unknown when the request is made with the oracle node's pre-committed private key to generate both a random number and a cryptographic proof. The DegenReborn smart contract will only accept the random number input if it has a valid cryptographic proof, and the cryptographic proof can only be generated if the VRF process is tamper-proof. This helps provide users with automated and publicly verifiable proof directly on-chain that the character lifespan mechanism using Chainlink VRF for randomness is provably fair and cannot be tampered with or predicted by the oracle, outside entities, or the DegenReborn team.

As DegenReborn expand the game across Arbitrum and Polygon, we’re planning to use Automation and VRF.
